For the first time since 1960, WGA and SAG-AFTRA both went on strike. Work stopped for a total of 192 days, from the start of the WGA strike in May to the end of the SAG-AFTRA strike in November. Even before the strikes began, scripted production was seeing ~13% pull-back in Q1 2023. Due to the strikes, over $10B in production spending was put on hold. In total, 2023 saw a 23% decline in the number of productions starting principal photography globally.

The impact of the strike had a profound effect on the production community. As 2024 progresses, a new normal in production volume will begin to emerge and all eyes will be on the next round of labor negotiations with IATSE and Teamsters.
